VitroHub: one employee portal for six businesses in 14 countries, in English and Spanish

Vitro’s people work in six businesses and 14 countries, and they needed one place for company news, the tools they use every day and the resources that apply to them. We designed and built VitroHub on Liferay DXP in 2024: bilingual, with content targeted by business, country and location, and run by Vitro’s own authors. We have supported it since.

Challenge

Vitro is the largest glass producer in North America, with more than 14,000 employees around the world (Vitro, September 2026). They work across six businesses, from automotive and architectural glass to FAMA, Alcali and Cosmos, in 14 countries from Mexico, the US and Canada to Brazil, Poland, Germany and China, at some 160 locations: float-glass plants, distribution centers, US and Canadian plants and dozens of auto-glass service shops. Vitro wanted one place for corporate communications: news, the tools and portals people use every day, people resources and the company’s key topics.

One portal for everyone could not mean the same page for everyone. An employee at a glass plant in Mexico and one in Canada need the news, resources and announcements that apply to them, not those of another business in another country.

And the first release had to be complete within a reduced scope, focused on corporate communications, with Vitro’s own authors ready to keep adding content after launch.

Approach

A complete portal from proven components

We built VitroHub on Liferay DXP from April to December 2024, starting from our existing portal components and adapting them to Vitro’s brand, so the reduced scope still gave a complete portal: a home page with news, quick access and announcements, a news catalog, Tools and Portals, People Resources, Key Topics with six topic catalogs, from Culture to Win to cybersecurity and sustainability, search, Help/FAQ and My Account.

The right page for each person

We set up audience segments by business (six) and by country (14), with variants of each collection, so every component shows the content meant for the person viewing it, and documented the employee attributes the segments read, refreshed from the directory each time a person signs in. Every employee gets the same experience; what changes is the content directed to them. The portal is responsive and bilingual, and employees sign in with their Vitro account.

Authors who run it themselves

We built and documented custom Liferay fragments for Vitro’s authors and developers, and trained the authors so they could load and maintain content on their own.

Search that follows the same targeting

Since 2025 we have supported the portal under yearly agreements. On Liferay DXP SaaS we configured search to filter results by each person’s audience, so an employee in Mexico finds Mexico’s content, and what people find matches what their pages show them.

Impact

VitroHub gives Vitro’s employees one bilingual portal, targeted across six businesses and 14 countries, where each person sees the news, tools and resources that apply to them, open to everyone with a Vitro account.

Vitro’s own authors publish to it, on components built and documented for them. The portal has been under our support since 2025, and still is in 2026.
