Public-service websites & portals

Websites and portals people use to get something done: apply for a service, find an office, check an account, order a part. We design them from research, build them accessible on your platform and help your team run them.

A public-service website is judged by whether people finish what they came to do. jfs.ohio.gov groups its department’s services into four entry points: Job & Workforce Services, Unemployment Services, Public Assistance, and Child Support, Adult & Family. Tech4Me cut a 45–60 minute assessment to 5–10 minutes.

We have built the sites and the platform underneath them. Since 2017 we have worked on the State of Ohio’s InnovateOhio Platform — Ohio.gov, agency sites, a supplier portal and an agency online store — and the State reports 161 websites on it (May 2025). For the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning we completed the ON TO 2050 regional plan website on Liferay DXP, which won two web awards in 2019.

The same discipline serves customers, dealers and members. CNH Industrial’s dealer portal, integrated with SAP ERP, served 12,000+ dealerships in 168 countries in 29 languages as of 2023, by CNH’s figures. WPS Health Solutions’ TRICARE For Life beneficiary portal, live in October 2015, won two 2016 eHealthcare Leadership Awards.

Sites people finish tasks on.

  • Service-first architecture

Content inventories, a new information architecture and tree tests with real audiences, so services are where people look.

  • Accessible templates and forms

Components built to WCAG from the first template, so every page authors publish starts accessible.

  • Search and self-service

Search, forms, maps and account tools that let people finish without calling.

  • Integrations

ERP, CRM and back-office systems behind the portal: inventory, ordering, warranty and account data where people need it.

  • Content migration

Content moved and curated, not copied: 100,000+ pieces onto the State of Ohio’s shared platform.

  • Teams that can run it

Training for authors and administrators before go-live, like the Contentful and Piwik PRO training for Ohio JFS.

From research to a site people rely on.

  1. Evaluate

Requirements workshops, a content inventory and a look at how people use the site today.

  2. Prototype

A new information architecture and clickable prototypes, tested with the public.

  3. Build

Accessible components, integrations and content migration, with system and user acceptance testing.

  4. Adopt

Training, go-live, a hypercare period and support for what comes next.
